How Do You Carry Water While Fishing?

This sounds like a simple enough proposition, but if you're anything like me, carrying water while fishing can be a bit of a pain in the butt. You see, a fishing trip for me involves a lot of walking. I like to hike along the river and explore new areas. This involves covering quite a bit of ground. In an average fishing trip for me, I would say I cover at least four miles round trip. This amount of walking requires that I carry quite a bit of water with me, especially on hot/sunny days.

I found that a single bottle of water just wouldn't cut it, so I started jamming my vest with as many water bottles as I could. This was incredibly bulky and uncomfortable, but it's what I did. Then a snowboarding friend of mine turned me onto the answer. It was so simple, yet I had never heard of this before. It's called a hydration pack. Snowboarders, mountain bikers, and cyclists have been using hydration packs for years, but they were still new to me.

So, taking the advice of my friend, I used a hydration pack on my next fishi8ng trip?..Problem solved my friends! It was awesome. I had water for the entire day, and got so used to the pack itself, that I forgot it was even there. You see, you wear most hydration packs on your back like a small backpack. But this backpack carries your water and even helps keep the water cold!

A hydration pack is, without question, the best way that I've ever seen to carry water while fishing. You should give one a try, because they sure beat carrying multiple bottles of water with you, and all of the problems that come along with it. I promise that once you give a hydration pack a try on your next fishing trip, the question of how you carry water while fishing, will be answered forever.

How To Choose The Fishing Trip Destination That's Right For Your Group

Try doing a web search on the words fishing lodge and you will come up with hundreds of thousands of matches. Visit any major sports show and youll find dozens of outfitters, each offering promises of the trip of a lifetime. How on earth do you narrow it down and find the fishing destination thats just right for you?

Try doing a web search on the words fishing lodge and you will come up with hundreds of thousands of matches. Visit any major sports show and youll find dozens of outfitters, each offering promises of the trip of a lifetime. How on earth do you narrow it down and find the fishing destination thats just right for you?

Identify Your Priorities for you fishing trip...

The first step in selecting a destination is to sit down with everyone else going on the trip and discuss what it is that you want out of the experience. Its not enough to decide you want great fishing, because that can mean very different things from one person to the next.

One person in your party might be delighted to catch 20 fish per day, while another might expect 20 fish an hour. This is the time to be perfectly clear and up-front, because the more honestly you communicate your wishes, the better the chances you will have a great trip.

Some important things to decide right from the beginning include:

What species of fish do you want to catch?
This sounds like a no-brainer, but it definitely needs to be discussed. If one member of your party really wants to catch lake trout and the resort you pick has lousy fishing for them, that person will be very disappointed. If the place you pick has fishing for multiple species, you should decide how much time and effort you want to apply to each. What matters most, and what matters least? Do you want to catch walleye, northern pike, bass, char?

Do you want lots of action? Or trophy fish?
Does great fishing mean catching a fish on every cast? Or would you go all day for one bite, provided that fish was a giant? Of course we would all like fast action with trophy fish, but its important to keep your expectations realistic. So between the two, which is most important? And what honestly constitutes a big fish for you? Would a 20-pound salmon make you smile? Or would it have to be a 50?

How are the fish caught?
Can you sight-fish? Or is it primarily deep trolling? Imagine how disappointing it would be to spend all winter watching people on TV fishing shows hammer big pike on topwaters, then find on your trip of a lifetime the only way to catch them is by deep trolling in 60 feet of water?

What is your realistic budget?
Lets face it; money is a deciding factor for all of us. You need to be honest about what youre prepared to spend, and also how you want to spend it. If you have $1,000 to blow on a trip, do you want a week at Lodge A, or three days at Lodge B which might offer more upscale accommodations or a better shot at a trophy fish?

Once you have decided exactly what kinds of fish you want to catch and how you want to catch them, you need to discuss the accommodations.

In order to get the kind of fishing your group wants, are you willing to rough it in a tent camp where you have to prepare your own food, or is a certain amount of creature comfort also a priority?

How important is a hot shower at the end of the day, or having someone else deal with the cooking and cleaning up? Can you live without a flush toilet? Would you rather bring your own boat?

Again, its important to be honest and realistic right up front.

Once youve established clear priorities for the fishing and the accommodations and set a rough budget, its time to start looking at what different lodges have to offer.

The species of fish you want to catch, the amount of time you want to be away and the amount of cash you have to spend should help focus your search to a general geographic area, while the priorities your group collectively identified should allow you to narrow your search within that geographic area fairly quickly. It's everyone's fishing trip ... so plan it well.

Now, its a matter of contacting fishing lodge operators within that region, and seeing what they have to offer.

Call The Government
State or provincial tourism departments are the best way to find fishing lodges within specific areas. If youve decided your group wants to go to Alaska to fish for salmon and steelhead, then start with a call to the Alaska department of tourism. They can send you all sorts of information on outfitters, general fishing information, plus stuff on license requirements, fishing regulations and such.

Selecting the right fishing trip destination is probably the single most important aspect of planning your fishing trip. Well, choosing the right fishing buddies is pretty important, also.

    Vacation Fishing Tips

    Vacation tips in fishing

When summer time comes and salmon are starting to run, many people who like fishing visit Alaska. Tourists tend to know when the salmon run starts. This may not be on purpose but they do know the best place to catch salmon is in Alaska.

Alaska's waters make their tourists get the Alaska fishing guide and provide the tourists the best spots in Alaska for fishing. First, you have to know what kind of fish you want to catch. You can choose from different varieties of fishes like silver salmon, arctic char, steelhead, Alaska king salmon, rainbow trout, or any other fish.

The Arctic, Southwest, South central, Southeast and the interior are the five known geographical places in Alaska. These are the sites where you can maximize your fishing expedition. You have to hire a fishing guide since you do not know the area. They may give the best spots for you and accompany you to your fishing.

Here Are Some Things You May Want To Ask From Your Guide

    1. You have to know how long they have been doing their work in Alaska. It is good if they have been staying there for a long time already. The reason is that they have much knowledge about the different yearly cycles of Alaska.

    2. Be aware of the time you will spend during the trip. Also, make note of the time that you will need during the actual fishing. The amount that you will pay your guide might only be consumed on the time of the boat ride rather than the fishing itself.

    3. Ask how much a particular guide would cost, because they have different rates depending on their skills, experiences and length of stay in their job. A guide that would cost cheaper than the average rate of the other guides might not have enough experience and skills.

    4. It is recommended that you have your references. This will help you narrow down your choices in selecting a fishing guide. Most people who have been there are willing to share about how satisfied they were during the fishing vacation. They can also give you some advice on what you need to do during the adventure.

    5. Remember, this is a chance for you to ask about particular issues that concern you. Do not hesitate to gather information from your guide. By this time, you should be able to have your final choice for your Alaska fishing guide that will be perfect for your plans and make the most out of your trip in Alaska.

    Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes

Gary LaFontaine needs no introduction. He was renowned worldwide for his innovative fly patterns, his books, and his enormous influence in the world of fly fishing and fly tying. In this classic work on fishing for trout in the high-altitude lakes of the West, LaFontaine turns his considerable talents to this highly specialized but also endlessly absorbing aspect of fly fishing.
In characteristic form, LaFontaine tackles his subject with zeal, packing in loads of equipment, including scuba gear, to do his research. The chapters alternate between stories about the sheer fun of fishing mountain lakes with hardcore, how-to fishing lessons.
LaFontaine uses his quirky wit and iconoclastic vision to peel back the mysteries of this fishery, including distribution of fish, primary food sources, and feeding patterns. Other chapters cover seasons, weather, fly patterns, and even how to use pack animals to reach your high-altitude destinations. Gary distills this research into a captivating amalgam of hard information and entertaining anecdote.
FLY FISHING THE MOUNTAIN LAKES will make you think and make you laugh. And you might catch a few more trout on your next mountain lake expedition.

Cowboy Trout: Western Fly Fishing As If It Matters

Cowboy Trout: Western Fly Fishing As If It Matters

Fly fishing intersects western history in so many ways that it is surprising that more writers--besides historians--have not sensed its rhetorical and scholarly opportunities. As fly fishing's practitioners grow in economic power, political reach, ecological awareness, and clarity of need, those intersections will only become more compelling.

In the fine tradition of angling books that celebrate fly fishing for the way it invites readers into unfettered ecological settings and connects them to the wonder of rivers, Paul Schullery's masterful Cowboy Trout raises to a new level of power the old saying that there is more to fishing than the catching of fish. The heightened sense of a wild place--not merely of the water but of a whole landscape-has turned out to be fly fishing's greatest gift to the West and to those who pursue fish in its rugged embrace.

Using Waypoints On Your Next Fishing Trip

If you have a GPS device, then you already know the many advantages of this technology. If fishing is your hobby or if you know someone who is an avid fishermen, why not get them a GPS handheld unit as a holiday gift? They will find this device easy to use and a great way to track hot spots and map out new ones.

While there are many types of GPS units out there on the market today, you should look for one that will give you depth measurements and basic coordinates. This will be helpful when you are fishing before daybreak in unfamiliar waters. Other options such as a color screen, detailed maps, and database of restaurants, motels, and hospitals are also very useful. Depending on the types of fish you are looking for, knowing the depth of different parts of the lake will help you find more fish. For example, some types of trout like to hide at the bottom of the lake.

GPS technology can also be used when fishing in waters that contain old ships, building foundations, fallen trees, and other large objects. By writing down coordinates and water depth, you will have able to fish along the edges of these objects and not have to worry about getting your lure caught. There is nothing worse than trying to get your line free from a tree branch or root when it is under the water.

You will also be able to monitor the movement of fish that are lurking underneath the water. This will help you find hot spots every time. You will be able to distinguish movement in order to determine if a fish is present or if it is a log or tree branch.

Before you begin your fishing excursion, you should enter in the coordinates where you place your boat in the water as your first waypoint. Not only will this give a point of reference for future trips, it will also help you in case there is fog or a sudden rainstorm and you cannot find your way back to shore. Waypoints can also be used for hot spots that you find during the day. Going back to these spots will probably yield you more fish.

Most GPS units can hold up to one thousand way points. This means that you can take several fishing trips in different areas and not have to erase your collected data. Some fishermen will keep a log of their coordinates and the places they have fished so that they can refer to it easily on their next trip. Log your coordinates the next time you go on a fishing trip. You will be amazed by the number of fish you will catch.

Some people will map out these coordinates and use them each time they fish. You can do this or you can make a list of coordinates you have visited already so that you can find other hot spots and not repeat the same ones. With a GPS tracking device, you will not become a better fisherman, but you will have more control over your surroundings in terms of finding those places where fish like to hide.

The Right Equipment for Freshwater Fishing!

When it comes to fishing, the right equipment is essential if you want to actually catch anything. It can literally be the difference between having cramp in your hand and fishing effortlessly. One piece of equipment that is extremely important is the fishing reel.

The Different Types of Freshwater Fishing Reels

Long gone are the days when fishing included a long stick and a limited length of fishing line. These days, high tech equipment is often used including high tech rods and high tech fishing reels.

There are three main types of freshwater fishing reels. These are,

    Spin casting Reels

These reels are placed on top of the rod and are ideal for beginners as they are easy to use and inexpensive.

    Bait casting Reels

Bait casting reels also sit on the top of the rod. They are otherwise known as Casting reels. They offer fishermen more control while fighting a fish and casting a fish inland. Their downside, however, is that they can be difficult to use, so they are definitely not good for beginners. They are also susceptible to Backlash which basically means the line becomes tangled.

    Spinning Reels

Spinning Reels hang below the rod and are often a lot more expensive than other types. However, they can cast further and are also more versatile. They are easy to use and are suitable for beginners. The great thing about these reels is that the handle can be changed to suit either right or left handed people.

The Various Components That Make Up the Fishing Reel

So, you know the types of reels available, but what about the components of the reel. There are various factors you need to take into consideration before choosing the right one for you.

The Spool varies in size and it is the part of the reel that holds the line. Each Spool holds a different amount of fishing line and therefore, you need to choose carefully which size you will need. When purchasing your Spool, look for how much weight it can hold and how long it is. You will see a listing similar to 10-250 or 15-160 that basically means it holds 10 pound test and there is 250 yards of line, or it holds 15 pound test and there is 160 yards of line. It is really simple once you know what you are looking for.

The Bail is another thing you have to consider. There are two settings on the Bail open and closed. It is what stops the line coming off the Spool. Before you are set to cast your line, you open the Bail. Once you have cast the line, you should turn the handle as this closes the Bail. Once the handle is turned, it makes a clicking noise that simply means that the Bail is closed. You will not always hear the click, but do not worry if you dont.

The Drag makes it hard for fish to pull more line from the Spool. When a fish is fighting with the rod, the rod absorbs the shock and the Drag engages and makes it more difficult for the fish to get any extra line. It is always worth checking the drag throughout the day, just to see that it is properly set.

Overall, the best type of freshwater fishing reels are the Spinning Reels because of their versatility and their ease of use. They may be more expensive but they are definitely worth it and they should last a long time!

    G. Loomis RoaringRiver Greased Line Spey Rod (Traditional Style)

Jock Scott over a century ago wrote of Greased Line fishing as performed by A.H.E. Wood to present a fly broadside to Salmon to entice the salmon to strike. This TRADITIONAL form of spey casting maintains a relatively fixed line length of 65-100 feet allowing you to cover water without retrieving or lengthening line on each cast; keeping you less tired and more focused on your prize. These powerful designs use the full bend of the rod, flexing through the mid-section when fully loaded. The ROARINGRIVER GREASED LINE SERIES of two-hand rods offer the ultimate combination of power and grace in a rod and provide you perfect swing speed and fly control. For spey casts from 50 to 150' the RoaringRiver Greased Line two-hand rod series will truly allow you to fish the water "Fine and Far off." To address the TRADITIONAL style of two-hand casting, our field experts have helped to define the ROARINGRIVER GREASED LINE RODS ; nine rods ranging from a 14' #8-9 wt to a 17'#10/11 wt. Designed to cast long belly floating lines using a long casting stroke, this traditional form of spey casting maintains a fixed line of 65 to 100 feet. It can cast into the backing at will, if you like. Change of direction is effortless, as you can pick a tremendous length. Too big? Not necessarily, as the big rod makes distance so effortless it offsets the need to bash lesser rods, and so you may find you are less fatigued after a session.

They allow you to cover water without retrieving or lengthening line on each cast; keeping you less tired and more focused on the prize. These powerful designs use the full bend of the rod, flexing through the mid-section when fully loaded. GREASED LINE GLX - The Greased Line GLX is crafted with our proprietary GLX grapite along with the finest for components available today. Featuring Hopkins and Halloway guides and exquisitely crafted Portuguese cork handles, fitted with a special composite core end-cap and fore-grip. Our exclusive offset-oval sculptured barrel reel seat, each with an ivory style insert engraved with a fly graphic. GREASED LINE DEVERON - A special graphite blend needed for the optimum actions to cast long belly lines using methods as traditional as the Deveron River itself. Featuring premium Hopkins and Holloway components and beautiful Portuguese cork handles. RoaringRiver Greased Line Spey Rod (Traditional Style) Series Model Line Weight Power Taper Handle Price FR18078-4 GLX 7-8 Stiff Medium 1005 $920 This is a dry fly long liner delight. It has great feel as it loads to for the D loop, with just enough butt stiffness to propel your offering 90 feet plus. At the light end of Greased Line style, this GLX rod is wonderful for smaller fish with enough power to handle a big one should it find your fly. For casters without lots of hand strength, looking for a longer rod to help get extra distance, this rod is the lightest weight 15 foot rod available. Experts may be surprised how well a #7/8 long belly line turns over and stretches for distance, even into light wind. Tremendous control of the drift is had with its 15 foot length. If you're seeking a "Far and Fine" Greased Line rod, look no further. FR16889-4 GLX 8-9 Stiff Medium 1005 $815 Traditional style spey casters have long enjoyed covering water with floating lines, making long casts without retrieving after each cast. this 14 foot #8/9 is a medium/light rod within this category. It has a comfort casting zone of 65 to 85 feet, and is light enough to make playing fish in the 10lb. range a joy. The rod action is moderate, and powerful. Anglers fishing the Gaspey Peninsula in Quebec rivers from a canoe, may find this model just the answer to cast to both sides with minimal effort. It handles casting all but the largest flies with comfort. FR18089-4 GLX 8-9 Stiff Medium 1005 $925 A step up from the #7/8, the 15'0" # 8/9 provides greater wind penetration, and added distance with flies into the small /0's. With moderate progressive taper and moderate butt end power, it'll lift enough line to help form long D loops, and make casts to 90 feet consistently. Optimal using long belly floating lines, it handles short/mid belly sink tips with comfort. When using shorter bellies, increase line size by one size. This is a versatile rod for most salmonids excluding the biggest representatives in very fast water. FR180910-4 GLX 9-10 Stiff Med-Fast 1005 $925 The rod power needed to hurl a vast amount of long belly #9/10 line is like a study in torque vs horsepower of your favorite brand of V-12 engine. Power and grace exemplify the qualities of this size rod. This model can cast all fly sizes with long belly floating and sinking lines. It still has a moderate progressive taper to give you feel and a fine sense of timing the D loop. Should the opportunity present itself to overhead cast, the rod will lay it out without tailing the loop. For bigger water conditions this is the 15 foot power tool for the job.
