Like many things in fly fishing you can ask 10 different fly anglers a single question and youll get 10 different answers. Asking what steelhead rod one should use for fly fishing is no different. Every circumstance is different. And the answer varies with each situation. However lets try to get a generic answer so everyone can at least get started in this rewarding aspect of fly fishing.
RODS
Most steelheaders use at least a seven weight rod. And in fact that is my recommendation. There that would be the end of it, except for one thing. We, fly fishermen have a perpetual habit of complicating things. Choosing rods is no different. A seven weight, in my opinion is an ideal all around steelhead rod, that will work for any steelhead conditions. However if one is fishing out west in big water, under windy conditions, fighting bigger than average fish, then you will be cursing your seven weight rod in no time, as being too light. Therefore before you buy, think about the fishing you most plan to do. If your favorite river is large and the fish are big and the current is strong then seven weight will not be big enough, if the stream is smaller and the fish are in the six pound range than seven weight will be plenty. And some thrill seeking fly fishers will use six.
As for length, the absolute shortest rod I would use is 9 foot. With 9 and a half recommended, especially for weights over 7. Again think of the conditions and the same rules for weight, more or less work for length. Longer rods provide longer casts, and more control. Out west two-handed spey rods are becoming more and more popular for steelhead fishing. With roll casting often required. Two handed rods allow the longest casting and can lengthen the fishing season, when high waters would force one off the river, when using a single handed rod.
REELS
When playing a steelhead, the reel becomes much more than just a place to store your fly line. The reel needs to be reliable as steelhead switch directions instantly peeling off line. They need to be large enough to hold your fly line and 150 yards of backing. Large arbor reels are becoming popular as they pick line up in a hurry, when your prized steelie decides to run at you.

Erie steelheaders tend to use floating line as the rivers are smaller, they are perfect. If you would like a little boost in casting then get a weight forward line, marked by WF on the package. On big rivers one should carry a floating line and a sinking tip line, as the conditions change during the season. Getting the fly down to the fish is vital.

Most steelheaders actually make their own leaders. Using Maxima Chameleon more often then not. Tippets should be 0x or smaller, Erie steelheaders can go up to 4x on clear water days. is to build wide fast.

investment - the commissions alone would set you and your
family up for life. This is it, this is the one... the opportunity you
have been waiting for. You knew that if you kept on working hard,
the right opportunity would come your way. And here it is,
at last...
It is because you are so good at what you do that you have been
targeted to play in their game. They need someone who can
really sell, some worker bee's to go and generate more honey
for them. Everything looks in order, they have the flashy car, the
money and a $5,000 suit to match. They also say they have the
contacts in the financial world that everyone wants to know.
There are a multitude of ways they will drag you in, all
involve substantial financial reward for you... don't be tempted.
Check them out, see who they are, at the very least run a
background check on them... do they come from where they say
they come from? Follow up on those stories they told you, and
put together the inconguencies for yourself. Keep an open mind.
And most of all be prepared for their answers. They have
answers, for everything. They'll tell you that you are too
suspicious, 'do you know how lucky you are to be a part of this?
It's only open to a select few'. If you start to bang the drum too loudly, they'll kick you out of their set-up...You're too much
trouble.
Being alert and listening to your instincts, those nagging doubts,
can save you immeasurable heartache down the road.
The reality is that these people will create a whirlwind, gather
the money and disappear. They leave you to face the FBI,
the civil suits, the angry investors who have lost their entire
savings. You even got your parents to invest their 401k, and
they lost it all... and you, well not only do you suffer the financial
devastation of being looped by the con, your reputation is mud
and the network you have cultivated over many years no longer
trusts you. You end up in the marketers graveyard.
Be alert, check them out and follow up... then confront them with
your findings. Most of all, listen and really "hear" the answer.

Fishing in Jamaica is part of a dream vacation for many. There are many excellent fishing spots, as is evidenced by Jamaica's international popularity as a fishing destination and tournament site. Deep-sea fishing trips are easily chartered, as are fishing tours of the region. As an island nation, fishing is important to the local economy, a part of the local culture. Thus, the savvy visitor may be able to arrange to do his fishing outside of the usual tourist spots, and instead enjoy a few of the places known and loved by local fishers.
Suzie-Q Deep Sea Fishing Charters operates out of Falmouth, which is close to Montego Bay, offers both 8-hour and 4-hour charters for up to 12 people. There are a wide variety of fish available in the fishing region, including blue marlin, white marlin, mahi mahi, wahoo, black-finned tuna, yellow-finned tuna, skipjack, kingfish, mackerel, and sailfish. Reservation must be made 48 hours in advance, and rates are $500 for 4 hours with up to 8 people, $900 for 8 hours. $30 per extra person, up to a total of 14, will be charged.
Jamaica Deep Sea Adventures, found at the Port Antonio marina, prides itself on the fine equipment it provides for its fishers. One of the special items is a chair designed specifically for supporting the fisher while he is struggling with large fish. Fishers can expect to be dropping their lines up to 6,000 feet into the beautiful salt waters that are home to numerous species of fish, including barracuda, tuna, and marlin.
Montego Bay is home to No Problem Fishing Charters. They offer half day charters for $360 and full day charters for $690. When you think of a state to go fishing in, there are few places in the country that conjure up more beautiful pictures in a persons mind than the great state of Montana. Montana is full of open spaces, very few people, and a lot of fish?.especially trout. The state of Montana is home to many species of fish, but the grand daddy of all of them has to be the trout. There have been movies made and many books written about the trout fishing in the state of Montana. The reason for this has to be the miles and miles of clear clean streams and rivers flowing through the state. A person couldn't throw a dead cat in the state of Montana, and not have it land near a river or stream. And that river or stream will, more than likely, contain trout.
Therefore many, many anglers look to the state of Montana for a fishing vacation, and not only a fishing vacation, but a trout fishing vacation. There are places that are better known than others, but the point is there are a lot of trout in Montana. I grew up in Pennsylvania and caught a lot of trout in PA's rivers and streams, but when I started trout fishing in Montana it was an eye opening experience. The size and quality of trout in Montana is quite impressive. For a trout angler, Montana is literally heaven on earth.
All types of fishing are available in Montana, but because of the movies, most people think of fly fishing (or flea flicking as my mentor referred to it). Flea flicking is allowed in all rivers and streams in Montana, but bait and spin fishing are also allowed in most of them also. If you're on vacation, you may want to check the individual regulations, because the flea flickers have a few streams locked down. I suppose this is looked upon as a completely fair thing to do if you happen to be a flea flicker, but I digress. The point is that all types of fishing can be done in most of the fishing area's in Montana.
Montana fishing vacations are very popular and with a little research on the internet you'll be good to go. You can find a guide and a great place to fish or go it alone, and still catch a ton of trout. One thing to keep in mind is that many of Montana's rivers are quite large, and anglers float these rivers in drift boats. Wading and fishing these rivers is tough without the help of a boat, because of their size. Again, a little research will answer any questions that you might have as to the size of a particular river.
The bottom line is that the state of Montana is a wonderful place to spend a fishing vacation. The natural beauty of the state is hard to match, and the fishing isn't too bad either. The trout fishing truly is as good as I've seen anywhere in the entire United States, and you add in the closeness to nature and the combination is hard to beat.

Florida Fishing For Pompano
Every fisherman who has ever thrown his bait into the Gulf of Mexico likes to fish for Pompano. They're the best tasting fish in the gulf, bar none. They're also fairly easy to catch from June until the middle of December. Winter and spring months are only fair because they are scattered and generally smaller than the one's caught in the summer and fall. The Pompano were running up and down the Gulf of Mexico this fine Fourth of July weekend. This is a fish that truly loves warmer water, with their preferred water temperature being between 82 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit.
Walking along the beach just after first light with the smell of the ocean and the spray from the surf leaving the taste of salt on your lips is an absolutely wonderful way to start the day. The sun, just peeking through the mist, will soon burn away any lingering wisps of fog remaining on the beach. Seabirds fighting over remnants of a mysterious sea object that has washed ashore, reminds me to protect the shrimp I had stored in a bucket next to my beach chair. A solitary pelican has just crept within 15 yards of me and is staring at the bait bucket as though he can see inside. He must have heard the shrimp moving around.
This beautiful morning I was fishing off the beautiful sugar white sand of Mexico Beach, just east of Port St. Jo and just down the road from Panama City, Florida. One of the few areas that is not overly populated, either by local fishermen or by tourists, it was a surprise to find myself relatively alone. Looking up and down the beach you could only see an occasional beach walker searching the sand to see what secrets the sea had washed ashore on the early morning tide.
Pompano are not fish eaters so the first thing you have to do when fishing is to secure your bait. Besides the shrimp I had already bought, I had to have sand fleas. They're on any Pompano's menu and they're usually plentiful along most beaches. The easiest and cheapest way to obtain these them is to catch them yourself! They're found at the waters edge as it recedes back into the sea. As the water rushes back from the beach, you'll see small holes appear at the water's edge. Those holes are where a sand flea is burrowing. Immediately dig down and you'll find them.
For my sand flea hunting I simply use a sturdy bucket that I've drilled many holes in the bottom and sides. This allows the water to flush out of its container and leave the sand fleas on the bottom when I dig for them. There are several types of sand flea rakes you could buy, but making your own is more fun. I've even seen kids on the beach digging for them with a stiff toy beach bucket. Just use whatever is handy. After you catch a dozen or more, put them into your bait bucket with a little sand and water and you're ready to start fishing. You can always catch more fleas when you run out of the ones you've already caught.
Pompano run in schools. Where you find one, you will usually find many, so remember that when you're catching sand fleas. Pompano also eat shrimp with live ones being the better bait but dead ones will work if your bait shrimp is not alive.
I use a weight 5' rod and a light reel with 8 to 10 lb test line. I use this because I know that most pompano are between 1 pound and 3 ? pounds. I also keep a 7' surf rod and surf reel with 15 lb test line in the other line holder just in case I hang a bigger fish.
The rig that has worked well for me starts with a barrel swivel on the end of my line. I'll then tie a 3' to 4' foot of 30 lb leader to the swivel. After that comes the two 8" lengths of leader on which I will tie 1/0 circle hooks. I'll tie those about 12" apart. After that, all that remains is tying a 2 ounce egg sinker to the bottom of the leader. Then all I have to so is bait my hooks and throw the rig as far out on the gulf as I can. That's usually about 30 to 40 yards.
There are other more sophisticated and expensive ways to catch both pompano and sand fleas, but I choose to keep it simple and as cheap as I can. Vacations are costly enough without spending a lot of money on bait and the fish you will catch with them. Most of us, if we add up the cost of a fishing trip and divide that into the amount of fish we catch, would be much better off going to a good restaurant. I figure that counting the gas for the trip to the beach, lodging, food, bait and a few souvenirs, each fish I caught that day cost me approximately $438.00 each.

Imagine The Possibility Of Fishing Inaccessible Water
Many years ago my friend and I hiked into a remote island in Canada, while carrying a fairly heavy fiberglass canoe. It was a three or four mile hike, and took us quite a long time while lugging along the canoe. You see the lake wasn't accessible by any other means, unless you had access to a helicopter with pontoon skids. If you wanted to get to this lake you had to hike in. And if you wanted to fish it you needed to be in the water because of the overgrown brush all around the lake. Hence the reason we lugged the heavy canoe along with us.
The hike was well worth it. We caught trophy pike and smallmouth bass for hours. It was incredible. You see, these fish hadn't been exposed to fishing. Almost anything we threw in the water caught fish, it was awesome. Then, when we got tired of catching fish, we had to lug that canoe back out. That wasn't so much fun, but the fishing was still worth it.
I've run into the same scenario in Montana. There are lakes, deep in the mountains, that hold fish (mostly trout) that haven't been exposed to much fishing either. I've fished some of these lakes, with varying degrees of success, because it's the same situation as I had in Canada. Once you get to these lakes, they're banks are so overgrown with brush, they are all but impossible to fish from shore. And the problem in Montana is that the mountains and trails that one must hike in order to reach these lakes, makes portaging a canoe a very bad idea. Some anglers fish these lakes with float tubes, which is fine, it's just that I personally don't like paddling around a lake with my feet, like some sort of retarded duck. Float tubing just isn't fun for me.
Then I started thinking about inflatable boats. Technology has come a long way, and there are inflatable boats nowadays that you can carry on your back. Either in a backpack, or like a backpack. I've found that this is the way to go. Get yourself a quality inflatable boat and foot pump and you're on your way. All of the inaccessible water that you used to think was impossible to fish, is now available to you.
I know from experience that fishing these types of lakes is highly effective. As I said before, fish in inaccessible lakes aren't used to anglers fishing for them, so they are susceptible to a variety of tactics. If you've never tried it, get yourself an inflatable boat, and give fishing these lakes a shot. You won't be disappointed. Not only is hiking with your boat great exercise, it makes for some great fishing as well.
