Fishing For Peacock Bass in the Amazon

These are some of the things we saw and did while fishing for peacock bass on the Nanay River. I wish I could show you the pink river dolphins, the strangler fig, the red spotted green discus, the big fish that got away.

We began our adventure expedition in the riverboat, Dawn on the Amazon, at the confluence of the Nanay and the Amazon River, departing Iquitos, Peru, at first light.

We motored upstream past Padre Cocha, home of the wonderful Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm we had visited the day before. Past Santo Tomas, the Iquitos waterworks, Llanchama, the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and eventually the village of Santa Maria, last outpost of civilization.

In Santa Maria the electrical generator is turned on at 7:00 p.m. and turned off at 10:00 p.m. The beer is always skunked. Very few people live in the jungle upstream of Santa Maria.

As we fished our way upstream it was as if we were going back in time to a way of life that disappeared in most of the world over one hundred years ago. We were sport fishing, everyone else was survival fishing. Four days and three hundred kilometers later we realized we were sport fishing for survival, living on what we caught.

To do it like a native, we would have had a fire platform on a sand base and cooked yucca and fish over a charcoal fire. We used a Coleman stove and supplemented yucca with rice and potatoes and ripe, juicy, tropical fruit. With a glass or two of wine from Chile.

Over the course of time, as the Nanay River meandered through the rainforest for thousands of years, many of the ox-bow bends were cut from the original stream bed by the annual floods. These natural banana shaped lakes are called cochas. It is in the black tannic acid water of the cochas, that we sought the holy grail of sport fishing, the peacock bass.

In a lifetime of fishing, only a few days stand out from all the rest as distinctly memorable. One of those days occurred on this voyage. I only caught three peacock bass that day, but fought several big, fierce, toothy fazaco for hours.

I caught five of the largest fazaco I have ever caught on six consecutive casts during part of the feeding frenzy. I was exhausted. The fishing was so great we decided to stay and fish that cocha again the next day and never got a bite.

Our catch for the trip was 140 peacock bass, but we lost count of the fazaco, black piranha, pike cichlid, acarahuasu, and other species. I am guessing they totaled two or three times the number of peacocks.

The most productive lures were spinner baits, in line spinners, and Excalibur's Pop'n-Image, in that order. We fished the Pop'n Image hard in two colors. The blue shade caught fish, the green shade never caught one.

As always the peacock bass relates to cover. Find submerged timber in the shade, and make several casts around it. Spinner baits are good to search the thick cover with because they do not get hung up very often and can be fished faster than many lures.

One way to catch peacock bass is to find where they are feeding. Listen for their distinctive splashing sounds and watch for them to follow your lure back to the canoe. Once you find fish, slow down, make more casts, try different lures.

Start out slow and quiet. If that does not work switch to a popper, chugger, rattle, or propeller bait. The native fishermen slap the water with their poles or paddles before they give up on a place. When in Rome, do as the Romans.

In my opinion, inch for inch and pound for pound, the peacock bass is the hardest fighting fresh water fish I have ever encountered. I also believe the peacock bass is one of the smartest and most difficult species of fish to catch, especially in the high-water months from November to May.

My Fishing Partner

Fly fishing here in Alberta, Canada is about as good now as it was when my father first took me as a young boy, 35 years ago. My dad was my fishing partner for all of my life, but sadly he got very sick and that was the end of his fishing days. Fishing was never the same after that, as for 2 years I walked the backwoods and cut lines alone, and I caught my share of trout, but something was missing. I finally decided that I would have to find someone to share this experience with me, someone who would enjoy this as much as I did.

Over the next two years I fished off and on with 10 different partners and came to the conclusion that I would never find anyone that enjoyed fly fishing as much as I did. I was totally convinced that I would never find anyone that would walk the remote creeks and rivers all day long without complaint, and sit by the campfire long after we should have crawled into our sleeping bags. My brother came out to fish with me one day and brought along a friend of his by the name of Zuk. Now this guy was green as grass when it came to fly-fishing. Zuk fished the day with us and I don't recall him catching anything more than rocks, and he lost all his hooks, and a dozen of the hooks I gave to him. Later that evening we started a small fire along the river we were fishing and I fried a couple of trout that my brother and I had caught. After we had finished eating we ended up sitting around the campfire long into the night, talking about the events of the day and poking fun at Zuk. The only comment Zuk had about the day was that he had never had this much fun fishing before, and he was wondering if he would be able to do this again. We were in the early days of September, 1994, and I thought we would be able to do one more trip, but the weather changed to early snow and we never did get out again that year.

The following spring I decided to give Zuk a call and we arranged a five-day trip together in September. After months of planning, the big day was here, and we packed my truck and headed out on the four-hour drive. I could see that he was as excited as I was and when we arrived I don't ever recall setting up camp in such timely fashion. We got geared up and spent the whole day fishing, and that evening, sitting by the campfire, Zuk's only question was why I caught all the fish and he couldn't catch any. We talked about fishing long into the night and I told him many little tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years. He sat in silence nodding his head. The next morning we arose with the sun and headed out for a long day of fishing, and as I watched him fishing and I could see that what I had told him the previous night had not been in vain. Zuk caught several fish that day and he was amazed at his good luck, that night by the firelight we talked about what he had learned that day. In all my years of fly fishing I have never seen anyone that could be so absorbed with every little detail he was told and still be able to store it in his memory, never to forget.

We have been fishing partners for 11 years now, and I have to always been at my best game when it comes to fishing for fear that he will show me up, as he has done so many times in the past few years. The first few years we fished together at some of the more popular spots, where there was usually several other fishermen, it was normal for at least one or two of them to come over and ask what I was doing different that allowed me to catch more fish than they could. As the years have slowly gone by and people wander over to us looking for advice, its not unusual for them to direct their questions at Zuk, and you know for some reason I feel good about that. This story is not about my abilities as a fly fishing teacher, this story is about an exceptional fishing partner who had the ability to learn, and teach himself, and in doing so helped make me a better fisherman also.

Essential Fishing Tackle For The Beginner

If you're a beginner in the world of fishing then a quick rundown of the most common types of fishing tackle is an excellent place to begin your education. We will deal with the most common types of fishing tackle; lures, flies, hooks, floats and sinkers. Once we have covered these basic elements you will have a better idea of what is needed to fill up your fishing tackle box.

Lures are the first, and possibly only, thing people think of when they hear the term fishing tackle. Lures are usually intended to imitate the look and movement of real fish. This will accomplish one of two objectives. The fish will either see the lure as food or as a challenge to their territory. Either response is likely to cause the fish to strike. No fishing tackle box would be complete without lures.

Next we come to flies, which are similar in purpose to lures and yet are different enough in the world of fishing tackle to earn separate mention. An entire art form has grown out of the attempts to create flies that will fool a fish into striking. Yes the world of fishing tackle has spawned an art form.

No lure or fly would be useful in your collection of fishing tackle unless they are combined with a hook. Single hooks, triple hooks, barbed or not, a hook is needed on every lure or fly to ensnare and hold the fish.

Finally we come to floats and sinkers. Your fishing tackle is not complete without floats and sinkers which take on a special significance. Experienced fishermen know that different types of fish are best caught at specific depths. The wide variety of floats and sinkers will place your bait at the specific depth most commonly associated with the type of fish you're trying to catch.

So now you know the most basic elements of fishing tackle. Of course we have only scratched the surface but you do now have the basics of fishing tackle jargon. Let these basics of fishing tackle be your first step on your journey into the wonderful world of fishing.

As you progress you will find more advanced fishing tackle and equipment available on the market.
For example a new exciting Remote Control Fishing Lure is very exciting. It is driven and controlled from a controller mounted on the fishing rod handle and can be driven into places where never before accessed by casting traditional lures.

Of course, you cannot talk about fishing tackle without discussing bait. To catch different kinds of fish, you needed to use different kinds of bait. You will also learn that you can't simply bait the hook and throw it into the water and then just sit there. You will need to use different techniques like how to "jiggle" the bait, cast it out and reel it back in, "drag" the bottom, and numerous other techniques to get the fish to bite.

Fishing in Texas

In the state of Texas, 2 licenses are needed. The first is called the Conservation license. This is a prerequisite a person must have before being allowed to obtain a fishing license.

The Conservation license can be obtained from the Fish, Wildlife & Parks or FWP. This is done by giving one's social security number and other information that is requested. A valid driver's license or any valid ID with photo must also be presented for security purposes for the license to be processed.

Once that is done, a fishing license can be acquired which is neither non-transferable nor non-refundable and is only valid for one year.

Fish that are normally caught in Texas are flounder, trout and sheepshead.

Here are some tips that will help anyone who wants to go fishing in Texas;

1. The first thing to do is get the right equipment: a good boat, fishing rod, reels and bait.

2. If one is not familiar with the place, it is best to ask the locals where the best fishing ground is then start from there.

3. Hooks can be in different sizes. The right hook for fishing is dependent on the kind of bait that will be used.

4. To prevent injury especially when taking out the fish caught in the hook, it is advisable to do it using wet hands.

5. The primary source of food for Seagulls is fish. If there is a flock in one area it means that place is good for fishing. One should approach quietly and set the bait and just wait for the fish to start coming in.

6. Some fish stray when the water is clear but it is quite difficult since the fish can also see the bait. To be able to catch more fish, the best place to do it is in deep water.

7. It is also advisable to try a variety of bait when fishing. Some fish can easily be caught with one kind while others are not. It takes practice to get it right and patience for the fish to come out and haul it in.

Fishing with the Right Line

There will always be challenges whether one decides to fish either in the river or in the open sea. The important thing to remember is to have patience waiting for the fish and doing the best to catch it when it appears.

To be able to fish, a person would need to get a fishing license since this is requirement by law and the regulations regarding fishing varies from one state to the other.

Getting the right equipment for fishing is also an important factor in making that experience a memorable one. Using the wrong kind of fishing line or one that is made of poor quality will cause many problems such as tangles and lost fish.

There are 4 kinds available in the market. These are monofilament, braided, fused and fluororcarbon.

The Monofilament fishing line is the most popular of the four since it has been around for a very long time. It also works well in different fishing conditions. The problem with this line is that it has "memory." This means that it has a tendency to keep to a certain shape if stored for some time. If a person does not fish often, it is best to purchase a line that is not very long and it is advisable to change it every time one goes out fishing.

Braided fishing lines are the strongest of the 4 available. These lines don't stretch and are quite easy to see since the woven nature of the line makes it float. The bad part about this line is also about its strength that causes abrasions on other things like one's hands, the fishing rod and the line that guides the reel. As such, one should have the right hardware around when using it.

Fused fishing lines are similar to braided fishing lines. The only difference is in the manufacturing process where fused lines are glued together with a coating applied over it instead of woven. This makes fused fishing lines share some of the difficulties with braided fishing lines such as making it difficult to cut without a sharp knife or scissors, its tendency to slide around a bit on the reel spool and its visibility to fish which will make catching fish a bit challenging.

Fluorocarbon fishing lines are getting more popular these days since fish are not able to see it in the water.

Netcraft has released an Internet Explorer plug-in that could help people avoid becoming victims of online fraud.
The Internet security company heralded the plug-in toolbar, which displays information about the Web sites a surfer is visiting, as a strong weapon against phishing attacks.
The Netcraft Toolbar provides you with constantly updated information about the sites you visit as well as blocking dangerous sites, the company, best known for providing statistics on what software Web sites are running, stated in a posting. "This information will help you make an informed choice about the integrity of those sites."
The toolbar displays information about the popularity of a site, the country in which the site is hosted and the Internet address of the site. It also indicates whether other toolbar users have flagged the site as a possible phishing scam, which uses fake Web sites that look like they belong to a trusted provider, such as a bank, to fool people into handing over sensitive personal information.
The effectiveness of the toolbar will largely depend on how widely the software is adopted, Netcraft Director Mike Prettejohn said.
"If the big banks go for branded versions to give to their customers, then (it will be) very effective," he said. "It's only been public for two days, and there is already an effective community of people blocking phishing sites."
The software is available as a plug-in for Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser and can be downloaded from Netcraft. A version of the program that runs on the Firefox browser from the Mozilla Foundation is also under development, the company said.
