Because of Florida's geographic location, saltwater fishing is obviously the focus of much of the fishing discussion in the state of Florida. The state of Florida has more than 3 million acres of lakes and 12,000 miles of rivers and streams that encompass the freshwater fishery in the state of Florida. In this article, freshwater fishing is going to be the focus, as saltwater fishing is in many ways an entirely different world to explore. As mentioned above, there is plenty of fresh water within the state of Florida for the freshwater angler to explore.

Two of the more popular freshwater fish to angle for in Florida have to be the Largemouth Bass and the Crappie. Largemouth bass for the shear sport and Crappie because they are considered such a delicacy. Largemouth Bass fishing in Florida is much like Largemouth Bass fishing anywhere in the southern United States. The largest lake to explore for Largemouth Bass in the state of Florida has to be Lake Okeechobee. The massive lake is a 730 square mile, relatively shallow lake with an average depth of nine feet, and is the second-largest freshwater lake in the continental United States. That's correct folks, the 2nd largest lake in the continental United States! That's a lot of water to hunt Largemouth bass in. There are also plenty of crappie within Lake Okeechobee for anglers to attempt to catch.

A very effective method of presenting live bait in Florida (especially worms and minnows) is to use what's called a set of gang hooks. A set of gang hooks is simply two small hooks tied in tandem, thus presenting the bait in a completely natural manner. Gang hooks are the best way to fish with worms, as many fishermen do, and aren't too bad for minnows either. The angler simply hooks the lips of the minnow through the top hook, and leaves the second hook free. Size 8 or 10 gang hooks work best for minnow fishing.

Florida fishing licenses are quite affordable as well. A resident fishing license will run about $15, and you can add a saltwater license as well for another $10. A non resident fishing license is under $35, and of course a weekly non resident license is available as well. You won't break the bank on your fishing license in the state of Florida, that's for sure. There are even lifetime licenses available for those anglers who fish a lot in Florida and don't intend on leaving.

The bottom line is that Florida is a great state for fishing. Not only is it affordable, but there are a ton of options as well. Who can argue with the 2nd largest freshwater lake in the United States? I have lost count of the occasions where I have happened to just settle into a swim, when so many were available, and proceed to hook an incredible catch, while other people fail even to get a bite.

This does seem to go beyond all usual parameters of success, like experience of a lake, or casting ability, or bait attractiveness, or whatever!

On one occasion, I had been fishing an enormous lake in France called ?Lac Du Salagou,? and not had a bite for about three days and nights. I was wondering if my homemade baits had fully dissolved or been pulled off the hook rigs. It was about 3 o?clock in the morning and there was not a sound. However, I awoke suddenly with a sudden and very strong feeling of concern for the safety of my fishing rods which were cast out for a big carp.

These rods were propped up on bite alarms by using rocks to stabilise them, and they were not very stable to say the least! I just stood up, and felt like I should put my hand over the right hand rod grip.

This very strong ?feeling? felt like a strange magnetic attraction?

At that very moment, it ?wacked up? into my hand, as very big and very powerful fish ripped line from the reel.

This fish fought like a very fit and heavy fish does, and it was a great effort to finally net and land this huge fish! I knew I would not have just lost the fish, but very likely my rod too, because it gave such fast violent ?take,? and I was amazed at the coincidence of my strangely almost compulsive actions that took place, immediately before it.

These kinds of ? ESP?experiences have occurred many times over the years, inevitably producing many of my biggest fish! Could it be that we have some ancient unknown ?cognitive connection? with other animals that we can sometimes detect under special circumstances!

When ?it? happens, I always feel as if there is an ?electricity in the air,? a kind of ?static charge,? and I feel hypersensitive to the surroundings, sounds, temperature and air. It?s like the feeling you get when the hair goes up on your arms and hands from the cold.

I get the same feeling about changing hook baits at very specific times during a fishing trip; an action which has frequently produced a very big fish soon afterwards. I wonder about these feelings and often resist them as being ?illogical,? but then reasoning that I am not catching at the moment; I may as well act accordingly, even if I sometimes feel stupid!

Is there something to this, or is just taking too much whiskey with my coffee? I would love to get feedback of other anglers? experiences!

Bass Fishing - America's Outdoor Sport

Since its inception in the late 1800s, bass fishing has been an exciting sport that captured the attention of many anglers. In the early part of the 19th century, sport anglers in the United states mostly confined themselves to trout and salmon fishing with fly rods. Bass fishing was mostly done for sustenance at that time, using poles and live bait. Because of this, bass fishing in the United States evolved almost entirely without influence from Europe?s sport fishing tradition.

The working class history of bass fishing shows in the traditional baitcasting reel that is the most popular among bass anglers. These reels store line on a revolving spool, reeling it back up via a handle, usually mounted on the right hand side of the reel. Bait casting reels allow for more delicate placement of bait and lures, but traditionally require more finesse to use because of the danger of overspinning the reel and tangling the line. These reels are also capable of using a heavier line than spinning reels.

While the mention of bass fishing may give you visions of cartons of squirming night crawlers, most bass anglers now use artificial bait. Common artificial baits include buzzbaits (an artificial bait with propeller type blades that churn the water on retrieval), spinner baits (baits similar in shape to an open safety pin with a hook) and plastic or rubber representations of live bait. In the latter case, particular colors may work best on any given day. These artificial baits have the advantage of not needing to be kept alive, or purchased just before a fishing trip. Artificial baits also come in a wide variety of colors to make them more appealing to fish and more difficult to lose.

Beginning bass anglers are recommended to start out in small ponds. These smaller fishing grounds will tend to contain smaller fish, but are excellent practice grounds before moving on to larger lakes. Wherever you fish, you will find that bass love to play hide and seek. They are often found lurking near structures and obstacles in the water, such as boat docks. If these are not available, places where water and plants change, such as the transition between rocky pond bottom and sand, or the transition between types of pond weed, can be good places to look for bass. Time, practice, and luck will land you your perfect bass. Once you hook your first quality bass, you too will catch bass fever.

How Important Is Your Monofilament Fishing Line?

An anglers fishing line is perhaps the most important piece of equipment that they have. Amateur anglers may not realize this fact, but it's none the less true. I've seen many anglers who go for months if not seasons without changing their fishing line. To me going for an entire season without changing my fishing line seems crazy (especially seeing as how I change my line every month or so), but again it's none the less true.

This usually has to due with one of two factors. Either the fishing line being used is too heavy for the type of angling being done, or two you just don't pay attention. If the problem is the first one, your line is too heavy for the type of fishing that your doing, this little mistake is costing you bites, just by virtue of the fact that the fish are much more apt to see heavy line. If the problem is the second, and you're just not paying attention, then you don't deserve the bites in the first place.

I personally use four pound test for 85-90% of my fishing. If my line is old or frayed in any way, it will cost me fish. The line is too light to be old in any way. Believe me; if I hook into a four pound rainbow trout with four pound test that's more than a month old, the fish will break my line, it's as simple as that. When the proper pound test is being used, it must be changed a lot, mainly because of fraying and stretching. When fishing line gets used, it becomes less strong as time goes on.

Here's a real life example for you. I was fishing with a friend last year and when he cast his line out, the line was coiled. It was coiled because it had been on the reel for so long. I made him change his line as soon as he could and this obviously alleviated the problem. If your line is coiled, like a slinky, for God's sake, change it! It's been too long. As far as paying attention goes, keeping an eye out for coiling is a big one. Another is keeping your eye out for frays in the line or brittleness. If you see either of these factors, it's time for a change.

The bottom line is that your fishing line is incredibly important to your fishing success. It needs to be changed often to keep it's strength. As I said, I change my four pound test every month or so. Anytime it starts to coil or fray, I change it as well. Never forget, your fishing line is as important as the type of bait or lure that you may be using, and you need to pay as much attention to your line as you do any other aspect of your fishing.

Fishing Rods - What Type Do I Need?

Choosing the correct fishing rod for your favorite fishing situations can be a fairly difficult task. There are all kinds of things written on the fishing rod itself, and all of them have a different "feel". I'm going to attempt to clear up some of the confusion for you. I've seen many anglers that have one fishing rod that they use for all of their fishing. This is a mistake and a sure fire sign that said angler doesn't catch many fish. I'm not suggesting that you should have a locker full of 50 different rods, but you should have two or three available for different situations. The type of fishing rod that you need really has to do with the kind and size of fish that you're fishing for. If you're fishing for Crappie, you need a different rod than when you fish for Steelhead.

Fishing rods come is the basic actions listed below. This information is printed (in very small lettering) on the rod itself, directly above the handle, along with suggestions as to lure and line sizes. The bottom line is that you must have different fishing rods for different fishing situations. In most cases the same fishing rod should not be used in all fishing situations.

Ultra light Action - these rods are used for fishing very small lures. Ultra light rods are perfect for small stream and river fishing, such as when you're wading. The heavier the current, the longer rod you will want. Ultra light rods are a great choice for trout and pan fish.

Light Action - Light action rods are used for the same situations as ultra light action rods. If you're just starting out, start with a light action rod and work your way to ultra light. Again, these rods are perfect for trout and pan fish fishing.

Medium Action - Medium action rods are right in the middle of the scale (imagine that). Medium action rods are to be used when fishing larger rivers for larger fish. I personally use medium action rods for my walleye and smallmouth bass fishing in Canada. Medium action is also a good size for trolling smaller lures.

Medium Heavy Action - This size rod is great for trolling most lures. Medium heavy rods are also great for most salmon and steelhead fishing. As the name suggests, these rods are to be used in situations where you're after bigger fish (10 to 20 pounds as a general example), although it's also a favorite size for large mouth bass anglers.

Heavy Action - Obviously, these are your big boys. Largemouth bass fishermen will use rods this size to fish heavy cover and the like. Also, when you're fishing for big pike and catfish, heavy action rods are a must. These rods are used for really big fish (over 20 pounds as a general example). This action rod is also used for heavy trolling, such as that done with downriggers.

As mentioned earlier, the bottom line is that the same fishing rod shouldn't be used for all of your fishing. That is of course supposing that you don't fish the same body of water for the same type of fish all the time. If you do only fish one body of water for a single type of fish, then 1 fishing rod will probably work just fine for you. An example would be myself. I'm primarily fish for trout in the same river and prefer to use ultra light gear. One rod doesn't cut it for me. I have to have two, because I've found that when the water is high, I need a longer rod. So I simply switch to my six foot six inch rod when the water is high (such as in the spring). The point being that in my case although I primarily fish the same body of water for the same type of fish, I still need a choice of fishing rods.

Night Catfishing Magic on Sprague Lake

Some of the most enjoyable fishing I?ve done in the Inland Northwest has been the times spent night fishing for catfish on Sprague Lake.

One of the reasons that I wanted to do an article on catfish fishing on Sprague Lake is that I recently learned of proposed plans by the WDFW, (Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife), to rehabilitate the lake this fall. It seems that the fishing angler density has fallen off the past few years to one of the lowest in the state. WDFW surveys say that the lake attracts fewer than five anglers per acre a year. While Catfish can be caught during the day at Sprague Lake, I?ve always had the best results and experience at night.

I, for one, would miss the magic of Catfish fishing at night on Sprague. My son and I usually head out with plans to be on the water prior to sundown. The best times for us are the hot nights of summer when the air temperature stays in the high 60?s and above after dark. Far enough from the city lights, the stars overhead shine brilliantly and the band of our Milky Way Galaxy can be clearly seen. The stars seem close enough to reach out and touch them.

Another part of the magic are the multitudes of bats, feeding on flying insects, swooping so close that they often tick your line as it leaves your rod tip to the water. Besides being harmless to humans, bats eat their weight in mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects nightly, which might otherwise be feeding off of you. Despite this benefit, I still recommend the use of a good spray or lotion repellant containing ?deet?. The best I?ve found is the Avon product called, ?Skin-so-Soft?. It is far and away the best smelling repellent I?ve used that was still highly effective.

Harper Island on the southwest end of the lake is an extremely active bird nesting site and even at night the sounds of gulls and other waterfowl fill the air. I have often wondered if the birds on the island ever sleep. If they do, you wouldn?t know it from the noises coming from there, even well after dark.

Since it is the nature of Catfish fishing to be a waiting game? a lot of that time is spent talking, telling stories of past fishing trips and anything else that comes to mind. We usually bring along a small propane barbecue and cook burgers and hotdogs. Good flashlights are essential, and one of the foam mounted headlights that can be hooked up to your 12 volt battery can be pretty handy for navigating to and from the boat launch, along the shoreline, and around Harper Island (see map above) on the southwest end of the lake. Usually one angler holds the light for the person fighting the fish or head-mounted lights can be great also. The east side of Harper Island has been our preferred spot for night cats, but I have heard from other people that the creek mouth, (Cow Creek), at the far southwest end of the lake is quite good also. Either spot is just a short distance from the public launch at that end of the lake.

Now let?s get down to the equipment you will need for these monsters.

Rods: First you will need a good stout rod. Any heavy to medium heavy rod in 6 to 7 foot length will probably suffice. Ugly sticks will do the job well enough.

Line: Line requirements too, are fairly simple, 15 to 25 pound monofilament or braid or heavy test fluorocarbon. If you?re fishing for trophy?s that get much bigger than 20 to 25 pounds you might want to up your line to 30 or even 35 pound test.

The Right Hook: The right hooks just may be the most important factor to consider. Since practically every bite you get your bait is swallowed, you want to make sure that when you set the hook that you don?t gut or throat hook your fish. A circle hook will slide back up the throat and then usually hook in the jaw.

In addition to setting without rod action, circle hooks are favored in commercial fisheries because they hook and retain fish, even on slack lines. They also tend to hook fish in the jaw, causing less mortality than standard J-hooks. Make sure to use a heavy-gauge hook. Cats have been known to straighten thin-wire hooks.

The Hook-set: Using circle hooks requires some attention to your hook-set. With reels with a clicker you would set your drag light and turn on your reel clicker. When the clicker starts to click, (indicating that the bait has been taken), tighten up your drag and slowly bring back your rod tip with a gentle sweep. Too early or too aggressive a hook-set can pop the bait out of the catfish?s mouth.

What Bait to Use? I have the best luck with a golf ball size chunk of fish on a 3/0, 4/0 or even a 5/0 size circle hook. Trout chunks work great, (but you didn?t hear it from me), and some people persist in using earthworm, chicken livers, stink baits and even cornflakes, oatmeal and flour concoctions. The truth is, just about anything edible with a strong scent is likely to attract and entice a catfish to bite.

Reels: Hands down, large bait-casting style reels have the cranking power to move these big fish. Spinning reels can and do work and many catfish fishermen swear by them. Just for fun, my 31 year old son hooked and played one large catfish with a child?s Scooby-Doo pole and even its inferior reel might have brought it boat side had the line not been broken off on the outboard motor.

Other tackle: Some people use weights to keep their baits on the bottom. With a large chunk of fish on your hook I haven?t found it necessary. Besides, the rocky bottom of Sprague can cause your weight to hang-up in the rocks. Some cats do like to roll when hooked, so a good ball-bearing swivel can be an advantage. Bobbers can be a good idea both from the standpoint of being a bite indicator, and, (if it is being slowly blown across the surface), it can drag your bait along with it presenting it to a larger area. I prefer to watch my line and rod tip. There isn?t usually much doubt when you have a catfish on. Last, but oh so important, a good large net is an essential item to boat these behemoths.

The Fight: I have heard some people say that catching a large catfish is like pulling in a large log, or some other such nonsense. These comments are usually made by someone who has never caught a large catfish. I can bear testimony that a Sprague Lake catfish of good size usually puts up one heck of a fight.

Getting there: The town of Sprague is just 37 miles from Spokane, WA. After leaving I-90 go through the town to the South shore road following it to the public access road near the southwest end of the lake.
